Holiday Events Near Leech Lake

If you are anything like us, you might find yourself rushing through the Holiday season without really getting to appreciate it. So this year we plan to slow down and try to enjoy some of the community events that occur this time of year.

Here are some of the events we can’t wait for:


  • Tuesday, December 19: Leech Lake Chamber Holiday Open House

This annual party thrown by the Leech Lake Chamber of Commerce goes from 2 to 4 p.m. located at 201 Minnesota Avenue East, in Walker, Minnesota.


  • Wednesday, December 20: Lucky Moose Holiday Open House

Everyone is invited to the Lucky Moose Bar & Grill rom 5 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the most magical time of the year.


  • Friday, December 22: Walleye Dinner

There’s no such thing as too much fish Northern Minnesota, especially when someone else is cooking it for you. Check out the Lake May Center for their Walleye Dinner.


  • Thursday, December 28: Holiday Ski/Snowshoe Hike

Meet at the Shingobee Recreation Area on Highway 34 at 11 a.m. to participate in this Leech Lake holiday adventure.


  • Sunday, December 31: New Year Nosh Party

Bring in the New Year and drink some great beer at Portage Brewery in Walker, Minnesota.

Winter Activities in the Leech Lake Area

Winter has officially arrived! Can you believe how much snow we have gotten this week already? This weather makes it the perfect time for Leech Lake winter activities.


If you enjoy snowmobiling in the winter, the Leech Lake area is the perfect place for you! The Leech Lake area offers hundreds of miles of trails groomed specifically for snowmobilers. With the many open fields, forests and lakes that cover the area, it could take you all winter to explore all the snowmobile trails available.


Two of the most popular snowmobile trails are the Heartland and Paul Bunyan trails, and they offer the best snowmobiling in Minnesota! The paved Heartland Trail stretches 50 miles across Minnesota and runs past the towns of Walker, Cass Lake, Akeley, Park Rapids and more. This scenic trail passes through prime Minnesota lake country and provides a secluded feel for the perfect snowmobile adventure.


The Paul Bunyan Trail is also a paved and level trail that runs for 110 miles from near Brainerd all the way through the Chippewa National Forest near Walker. The trail finally ends at Lake Bemidji State Park. This trail also provides a very scenic ride and features many trail crossing rivers and nearby lakes.


Many bars and restaurants along these trails cater specifically to snowmobilers and offer snowmobile parking and heated gear storage. The winter season in the Leech Lake area also offers both cross country and downhill skiing for even more winter fun! Many of the trails in the area, including the Heartland and Paul Bunyan trails, are perfect for a day of cross country skiing. There are also many small hills in the area for the skiers that have a need for more speed! Many of the Leech Lake resorts are open year round and are the perfect place to sit back and relax next to the fire after a long day of skiing.
