Leech Lake 2013 Deer Hunting Opener

It’s that much anticipated time of year again in Northern Minnesota: deer hunting season! The Leech Lake and Walker area attract hunters from all over the Midwest every year to participate in the popular fall tradition of deer hunting opener weekend.

 

Deer hunting season officially begins in the Leech Lake area on November 9th, so you only have two more days to prepare yourself before you head out on Saturday in hopes of getting your 30 point buck. The Leech Lake area offers the best hunting spots in Minnesota, and you can really feel the thrill and excitement in the air as hunters from all over the area set up their deer stands and wait in the chilly November air for their chance to shoot their prized buck.

Leech Lake Halloween Activities

It’s that time of year when the weather starts getting colder and the leaves begin to change colors. The fall season also brings with it the spookiest holiday of the year: Halloween!

 

The Leech Lake area offers many Halloween activities that your whole family can enjoy. From costume parties to trick or treating, people of all ages will have a great Halloween at Leech Lake!

 

Your children will love the free Halloween games and trick or treating at the Camp Olson SPOOKtacular in Longville next Saturday the 26th. The spooky festivities will run from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

 

There is also plenty of Halloween fun for adults in the Leech Lake area! The Hackensack Legion Post 202 will be holding an adult Halloween party also on Saturday, October 26th, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The party will feature music and a prize for the best costume.

 

The city of Backus is also hosting a variety of Halloween activities the whole family will enjoy. On October 26th, they will be holding a children’s party for kids ages 12 and under that will run from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. The party will be filled with Halloween themed activities, including pumpkin picture coloring, a costume style show, a fish pond and a ring toss and bean bag throw with prizes. There is no charge for the party, and a free lunch will also be provided!

 

Later that night in Backus, the adult party starts at 8:00 pm. There will be hors d’oeuvres, a costume contest with prizes and complimentary cash and prize drawings.

 

Make sure to bring your whole family to Northern Lights Casino Halloween night for trick or treating! The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe is once again sponsoring Treats for Tots at the casino on October 31st.

Leech Lake Fall Activities

The fun at Leech Lake doesn’t stop once summer is done! The Leech Lake area offers many family activities all throughout the year, including many fall activities.

 

If you’re a golfer, the Leech Lake area is perfect for you! The golf season at Leech Lake extends well into the fall. To take advantage of the excellent Leech Lake golfing, book a tee time at one of the area golf courses this fall. The Longbow Golf Club, Tianna Country Club and Wedgewood Golf Course and Driving Range are all open to the public and only a short distance from Walker, MN. If you would rather spend the day with your whole family, the Wildwedge Mini Golf Course offers fun for all ages of children and adults.

 

Fall at Leech Lake is also the perfect time to check out the beautiful fall colors in the area. Taking a bike ride or walk on one of the area trails is one of the best ways to experience the fall colors. The Paul Bunyan trail is the longest Minnesota bike trail and offers 112 miles of fall sightseeing. Other biking and walking trails near Walker include the Heartland Trail that runs from Walker to Park Rapids and the North Country National Scenic Trail.

 

The renowned Leech Lake fishing is another fall activity that is not to be missed. Leech Lake is best known for its Walleye fishing, and it does not slow down in the fall! The Walleye in Leech Lake increase their feeding patterns in the fall to ready themselves for winter and can be found in abundance on the major points of the lake, including Cedar, Sugar, Roger’s, Stoney, Pine, Hardwood and Ottertail points. Fall at Leech Lake is also the perfect time for Muskie and Northern Pike fishing.

Fall Has It All Festivities

Can you believe it’s already September? Even though summer is now over, the fall season brings many things to look forward to in the Leech Lake area.

 

One of the best things about fall in Leech Lake is the beautiful changing colors of the leaves. The area is full of the rich autumn colors and crisp air. Another great thing about fall here is the Fall Has It All celebration! These annual festivities are held in the communities of Walker, Longville, Remer and Hackensack.

 

This year, the Fall Has It All celebration begins next Thursday, September 19th. To gain admission to all the events, a $4.00 button must be purchased at local merchants. The opening events include the Wine and Cheese Reception at the Longville Arts Center and the Ducks Unlimited Banquet in Walker at the Moondance Saloon.

 

The festivities continue until Saturday, October 5th. Some of the events included in the first weekend of the festival are Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 21st in Longville with a beer garden and live German music and an Oak Ridge Boys concert that night at Northern Lights Casino.  The weekend after that features a farmers market in Walker and dances and a spaghetti dinner in Hackensack.

 

The closing weekend of the Fall Has It All festivities, October 4th and 5th, will include the Northwood Quilt Show at the Northern Lights Event Center and the Fall Fest Bake Sale and Pumpkin Pie Auction at The Depot in Remer.

Cajun Fest at Northern Lights Casino

It’s that time of year again; Cajun Fest at Northern Lights Casino is back! Cajun Fest is an annual Leech Lake area event that features Cajun food, music, dancing and many other fun festivities.

 

Cajun Fest is held under the Big Top tent at Northern Lights Events Center. This year the festivities will take place this weekend, August 15th to 17th.

 

Cajun Fest starts out on Thursday with music from authentic Cajun musicians starting at 11:00 am. There will be a children’s parade held at 6:00 pm and a Mardi Gras parade at 9:00 pm. The fun will continue until 10 that night.

 

Friday and Saturday will also offer live Cajun music all day long and parades both nights. There will also be a meet and greet with Liz the Gator Queen and her daughter Jessica from the popular History Channel TV show Swamp People. The meet and greet will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and again from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on both Friday and Saturday. There will also be fireworks following the festivities on Saturday night.

 

The bands at Cajun Fest are some of Louisiana’s most popular Cajun musicians. They will be performing a variety of contemporary, Zydeco, Cajun and Swamp Pop music.

 

Besides the music, there will also be Cajun cuisine available, free dance lessons, costumes, free beads and much more! If you want to experience a Cajun style party straight from Louisiana’s Bayou Country, make sure to stop by Northern Lights Casino this weekend!

Walker Bay Days

If you’re looking for a day of fun filled outdoor events that your whole family will love, you need to check out Walker Bay Days! Walker Bay Days is hosted by the Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, and will be held this year on August 3rd.

 

According to the Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, the mission of Walker Bay Days is to celebrate our family values, community pride and commitment to the preservation of the Leech Lake area, our bountiful resources and cultural history. Entrance into this family focused event is free, but there will be participation fees for most of the activities.

 

The Walker Bay Days festivities will start at 9:00 am with a 5K run beginning at Walker City Park. The entry fee for this race is $15, and it includes a commemorative t-shirt. Trophies will be given to both the overall male and female winners, and there will also be ribbons for the top three participants in each age group.

 

A volleyball tournament will begin at 10:00 am in the park. The tournament has an entry fee of $20 for each team of six. This tournament is sponsored by First National Bank, and the first place team will win half of the entry fee pot!

 

At 11:00 am, there will be a Pow Wow exhibition, and the food booths in the park will open. Shortly after that at noon, the Bingo tent and the inflatables will both open. These inflatables are going to be the best display in Walker all summer, and you’re kids are sure to have a blast bouncing around in them! A wristband for the inflatables can be purchased for $10. A craft fair will be running throughout the day, and there will be live music on the main stage under the tent for all the festivities.

 

The Big Dig, sponsored by Dale and Harriet Jones, will be back again this year! Registration for this beloved annual event will begin at 11:00 am, and the Big Dig will officially start at 1:00 pm. The entry for this event is free, and your children will have the time of their lives digging through the sand for tokens that they can trade in for prizes.

Girls Night Out in Walker

Hey ladies! Are you looking for a fun night where you can shop and go out on the town with you friends? Look no further than Girls Night Out in Walker!

 

Girls Night Out is an annual summer event in Walker, MN. This year the event will be held on July 10, August 14 and September 25. Registration for Girls Night Out will begin at 5:00 pm on each of the evenings. During this fun filled event, stores in Walker will stay open late and offer specials and activities for the participants. After the stores close, there will also be drinking and dining specials offered at local restaurants.

 

The next Girls Night Out on July 10 will also be open to the rest of the family and will have plenty of activities that everyone will enjoy. At 5:00 pm, swag bags will be handed out at registration on Fifth Street. To fill up the swag bag, the ladies will have to visit the participating stores to pick up their gifts and freebies.  Families will also have the opportunity to register for door prizes.

 

Other activities on Family Fun Night include water balloons, a golf putting game sponsored by Tianna Country Club and live music. There will also be Wine Cork Pulling for the adults. Wine Cork Pulling is a game where you choose a cork for $10 and win the bottle of wine that it matches with. Every participating store will donate their favorite bottle of wine, so you never know what you’re going to get!

 

This special family night of Girls Night Out is sure to be a good time for all ages! Make sure you come out to downtown Walker on July 10 to enjoy the fun!

22nd Annual Moondance Jam

What’s better than an outdoor music festival in the summer? If you want to enjoy 3 days of amazing rock music, check out Moondance Jam in Walker, MN.

 

Moondance Jam is scheduled for July 18-20 this year, and the lineup is better than ever! The headliners for the 3 day festival are Motley Crue, Slash and The Offspring. Many other bands will also be performing, including Cheap Trick, Buckcherry, Theory of a Deadman, Halestorm and many more! The music starts at 11:00 am daily and goes well into the night.

 

For those that want to get the party started even earlier, there will also be a Pre Jam Party, on Wednesday July 18, with music from Hairball and other classic rock cover bands.

 

General Admission and VIP tickets are available for this event. The VIP tickets include drinks, food, band meet and greets and special VIP seating above the stage.

 

Camping is a huge part of the Moondance Jam experience. The campground has access to showers, ice, firewood, fresh water and bathrooms. This year the camping contest theme is “Rockin Campin Crue”, so make sure to dress up in your best 70s and 80s wigs, makeup and clothing.
