34th Annual Eelpout Festival: February 14th -17th, 2013

Friday, February 1st, 2013

For three days every February, Walker, MN has drawn crowds of more than 10,000 people for a festival that celebrates what may be the ugliest fish in the world, the eelpout. People gather on a frozen Leech Lake – the 3rd largest lake in Minnesota – in the dead of winter to participate in a Minnesota tradition of eating good food, playing some interesting games, and celebrating a really ugly fish.

Now what exactly do you do on a frozen lake for three days? Well for starters, you can bring out your ice house and fish, but don’t expect them to drill your holes. If, after a few hours of fishing, you haven’t caught a thing, you can grab some food on the lake: anything from eelpout nuggets to walleye cakes. The Eelpout Festival also offers entertainment and activities like eelpout curling, a polar pout plunge, rugby, and the eelpout derby.  They have live music, dance parties, a fish fry, bull riding, and much, much more.

This year’s Eelpout festival will take place from February 14th through February 17th, 2013. To take part in all of the cold weather fun, all you have to do is purchase an Eelpout festival button for $10, which can be purchased online with only a $2.99 shipping fee, no matter how many buttons you order. Make sure to get your button before midnight on February 3rd, 2013. Buttons purchased after this date will be $15.

Come out to Walker, Minnesota on Leech Lake and join in on all the fun! Kiss an eelpout for good luck, and take in the sites. Until you experience it, you won’t get it.

Country Inn Walker
Looking for an affordable Minnesota getaway with proximity to endless activities and attractions? There is no better place to stay than the Country Inn Walker. The Country Inn Walker has built a reputation of clean rooms and excellent customer service over the years. This Country Inn is much different from a typical hotel stay, as June LeBlanc (G.M) puts it,

“It is on a more personal level, we like to make people feel at home while they are here.”

The staff will do what it takes to ensure a comfortable stay for guests. Although they don’t have bag boys, they will go out of their way to carry guest’s luggage. Guests are also greeted to the Inn with fresh baked cookies and coffee available 24 hours a day. Some other notable amenities offered at the Country Inn include a pool and hot tub, continental breakfast, whirlpool suites, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

This Inn appeals to a variety of people including fishermen, bikers, families, couples, and others. The fishermen enjoy being able to fish during the day, hot tub at night, and enjoy a continental breakfast in the morning before they go back out to fish Leech Lake. The lake is less than a mile away with just a frontage road between the Inn and Leech Lake. Families enjoy the indoor pool as well as the MN bike trails that go right by the Inn. The Inn is also very close to downtown Walker, MN where there is a variety of activities for adults and children. Walker is a destination for many bikers. Many of them find the Country Inn Walker to be a perfect place to stay while they bike the trails. June explained,

“One group of cyclists has been coming back here for 8 years to bike all the trails over their week stay at the Inn.”

When I asked June her favorite part of running the property, she did not hesitate to say, “The people!” June explained her interest in talking with new people. She went on to tell me about a group of Vietnam vets that stayed at the Inn last summer that hadn’t seen or spoken to one another in 34 years! It sounds like a diverse group of people can be found at the Country Inn Walker, as well as countless activities to occupy ones time!

The Leech Lake area is one of abundant scenery, great history and endless entertainment. This is a destination for vacationers, couples, families, groups, day trippers, adventure seekers and more.

Leech Lake is one of the largest lakes in Minnesota; covering about 112,000 surface acres! It offers anglers a world-class fishing experience. The irregular shape of the lake and the many bays give this lake about 201 miles of shoreline, much of which consists of a mixture of gravel, rubble and boulder. This mixture is used primarily by the spawning walleye, which are plentiful in Leech Lake. Along with the large number of walleye, there is also excellent fishing for muskies, large and smallmouth bass, perch, crappies and sunfish.

Leech Lake is also a great destination for families and groups. People enjoy spending time along the sandy shores of the lake. There are all kinds of water sports that are popular on the lake including: water skiing and wakeboarding, knee boarding and tubing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, jet skiing, boating, paddle boarding, and much more. Along the shoreline people enjoy games of volleyball, shuffleboard, jumping on water trampolines, swimming, floating, and relaxing. The entertainment on the lake is truly unlimited!

Off the lake, many people enjoy hiking and biking the surrounding trails in the area. The Leech Lake area consists of trails along the Shingobee River Valley offering hikers a great 8 mile hike. The Heartland Trail is Minnesota’s oldest paved trail with miles of beautiful scenery. Lake Erin Interpretive Trail is a nice 5-mile hike around Lake Erin. Mi-Ge-Zi Trail is a pleasant paved trail, 4 miles long, great for both hiking and biking. It is located in the Chippewa National Forest and routes around Pike Bay and Cass Lake. The North Country National Scenic Trail cuts through the Chippewa National Forest and is part of the longest continuous footpath in North America! Oak Point Trail, Paul Bunyan State Recreational Trail, Shingobee Trail, and Stony Point Recreation Area Trail, are some of the other trails in the area. Near to the area is the world famous Itaska State Parks with its own trail system with trails leading over the Mississippi River and beyond!

In addition to all of the lake activities, hiking, and biking, many people are attracted to the Leech Lake area for the great selection of scenic golf courses of northern Minnesota. There are also a number of casinos in the area where people enjoy bingo, blackjack, poker machines, and much more! The area also offers adventure tours including sightseeing, community events, and resort visits. There are also a number of museums to explore in the area, wineries, and breweries.
